Dera Sacha Sauda Case Verdict Out, Ram Rahim Gets 20 Years Of Rigorous Imprisonment
The sensational verdict of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been declared by the Special CBI court at the Sunaria Jail in Rohtak. The former Dera Sacha Sauda chief, known for his extravagant ways of conducting himself as a modern self-styled God-man, was convicted for rape charges. After the rape case dragged for fifteen years, the final verdict is out, with a sentence of 20 years in prison. The CBI court has sentenced Ram Rahim Singh to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in each of two rape cases that he has been convicted for. The court, in an important demarcation, stated that the sentences will run consecutively and not concurrently. This makes the total punishment 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in jail.
The case of Dera Sacha Sauda became high-profile over time, when Ram Rahim was accused by a Sadhvi who alleged in an open letter to the then PM Vajpayee in 2002 about Ram Rahim’s sexual exploitation by calling it ‘Pitaji’s maafi’.
Later on, other Sadhvi’s came out in the open to reveal similar experiences that further brought Ram Rahim into the limelight of CBI probe. Despite the allegations, Dera Sacha Sauda’s devotees turned out in lakhs in favour of him, disrupting the northern parts of India, specially Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. The conflict between the protesters and military troops led to the death of 38 people and 250 injured.
As a result of which, Curfew was laid, mobile services were cutoff, schools were closed, trains were cancelled and paramilitary were deployed over the weekends. After much hype and hoopla, the verdict came out in favour of the victims. Apart from the imprisonment, Ram Rahim has also been fined Rs.15 lakh fine each in 2 cases & Rs.14 lakh each to be paid to both victims
Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s lawyer says,
“The court gave him minimum punishment because no one can take away, the good work that he has done.”
The lawyer also added that he will move Punjab and Haryana High Court for relief. The CBI Court in its judgment has said that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh will be treated as any other ‘ordinary’ convict and will not be provided special amenities or an attendant.
Ram Rahim is also being tried for murder allegation of Ram Chander Chatterpati, a Sirsa-based journalist and castration of 400 men
