Breakfast Babble: No More Of That “New Year, New Me” Nonsense

 Breakfast Babble: ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.

It’s the New Year! Time to turn over a new leaf, start over, wipe the slate clean and start on a fresh page!

Groan. Enough already.

Talk about unnecessary pressure while stepping into the new year. Who said ‘starting over’ was such a great idea in the first place?

Starting on a fresh page means a chance to rewrite your story. To erase all that happened and focus on the things to come. But how do you move forward without knowing how you got here in the first place?

New Year Resolutions

You are a sum of all the choices you made, the decisions you took and the consequences you faced.

Whether the year was a good one or a difficult one, it changed you – for better or for worse. Wiping the slate would be mean erasing all of that history which defines who you are now. You are a sum of all the choices you made, the decisions you took and the consequences you faced. It took years to make you who you are right now. So, don’t wipe the slate clean.

Personally, 2017 has defined me. It’s been a year of many of firsts and lasts in terms of education, calling a new place home, rekindling passions I thought I had lost and coping with all kinds of changes.

At some point of the year, I realized I didn’t like who I was becoming. There were regrets and plenty of thoughtless decisions made. But I have quite a bit to take away from this year and that makes it all worth it.

If you don’t like who you’ve become, deal with it. Don’t try to push it into your closet and become someone you aren’t for the sake of ‘ new year’s resolutions ’. That’s why resolutions don’t stick. Don’t hide who you’ve become, work on it. Let’s start from here.
