BJP Has The Highest Number Of Politicians With Crime Record Against Women
Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has found itself in the soup when it comes to the personal record of the politicians in the party. The fact that politicians have a criminal record is not new, but what makes this news worth noting is that the highest number of the MLAs and MPs with a background of crime record against women come from the ruling party itself!
As per a study by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), a non-government organisation working for electoral reforms, as many as 51 MPs and MLAs have declared cases of crime against women, including of alleged rape and abduction. 48 of those are MLAs and 3 are MPs.
BSP is the second highest with 36 lawmakers having criminal records against women, followed by Indian National Congress with 27 lawmakers.
The ADR said,
“There are 51 MPs and MLAs who have declared cases of crime against women such as charges related to assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, rape, husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty, buying minor for purposes of prostitution and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.”
Also, 334 candidates analysed who had declared cases related to crime against women were given tickets by recognised political parties and known parties such as BJP, INC, BSP among others.
Among the states, Maharashtra has the highest number of MPs and MLAs (12) who have declared cases of crime against women, followed by West Bengal (11) and Odisha (6). Overall out of the analysed 1,581 MPs and MLAs, 33% declared criminal cases. This is the plight where one third of the political system has a dent in its resume with BJP leading the pack.
