Thugs of Hindostan is one of the biggest Bollywood films in quite a while. Backed by a production house like Yash Raj Films, it stars bigwigs like Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. It is set in the late 18th century and is based on Amitabh Bachchan’s Khudabaksh Azaad-led band of thugs that is fighting against the British East India Company rule. The movie also stars Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
Trade analyst Girish Johar says the movie should around earn Rs 50 crore. “In all the languages, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, Thugs of Hindostan will earn Rs 50 crore on the day of its release. And, if the content of the film also turns out to be decent, it will reach the Rs 100 crore mark within 2-3 days,” said Johar.
He also added Thugs of Hindostan has no competition, at least currently. “The factors that will work in favour of Thugs of Hindostan are, one, it is a big holiday release, secondly, it is releasing on the biggest window available for a Bollywood film as there are no other releases scheduled around it and third, the film boasts of big names like Aamir, Amitabh, Katrina and Yash Raj Films,” he said.
Thugs of Hindostan is a big release and is made on a big budget. But bad reviews might affect its performance. The Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta gave it only one star and wrote, “As you slide into Thugs of Hindostan, you expect a rousing tale of thuggery and patriotism, because that’s what the name suggests. You also expect a modicum of quality filmmaking because you can’t get more A-list than Yash Raj Films, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. What you get instead is nothing but a massive cherry-picking enterprise from big entertainers of the past, many of them YRF’s own. Not only do you end up picking up on past films, scenes and references, you are left struggling with staleness and boredom.”
