Election Commission Announces Himachal Pradesh Assembly Election: Key Dates

New Delhi, October 12: The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced the dates of Himachal Pradesh elections that are to be held in a single phase on November 9 and the counting of votes would begin on December 18. The term of the 68-member HP Assembly ends on January 7.

“The Model Code of Conduct comes into force immediately,” Joti- the Chief Election Commissioner said while announcing the poll schedule for Himachal Pradesh. The code of conduct will be applicable for Himachal Pradesh as well as for the Union government in matters related to the state.

Himachal Pradesh will be the second state after Goa with 100 percent VVPAT (paper trail of votes) coverage. The paper trail machines will be deployed along with EVMs in all the 7,521 polling stations.

For the first time ever, the Election Commission will set up 136 all-woman managed polling booths in Himachal Pradesh, with each constituency having two women. The Commission has also increased the size of the VVPAT paper trail.

Himachal Pradesh election is a battle between Congress and the BJP. Sushil Shinde, Congress’ General Secretary in charge for Himachal said his party is already prepared for elections, adding,” Have been travelling there for the last about 2 months.”

“At the ground level, people are in favour of Congress because they are tired of Modi government,” added Shinde.
